Nothing to Lose

Four channel audio.
Loop. 8 minutes.

Across the 8 minutes of this work Etchells’ performs repeated variations of the phrase ‘Nothing to Lose Sleep Over’, instilling shifts of pace and inflection, as well as affecting other more substantial changes through simple re-sequences, edits or truncations of the text. From the aphoristic ‘Nothing to Lose’ to imperatives like ‘Lose Sleep Over Nothing’ or simply ’Sleep’ the text is layered, looped, and overlapped across 4 speakers. As the work unfolds the semantics of the shifting phrases are subject to continual revision and compromise, transformed as rhythm, melody and pure vocal texture.
