Etchells’ Live Like deploys the idiomatic phrase ‘Live Like There Is No Tomorrow’ as the basis for a work using processes of adding and subtracting individual words in order to create new meanings. Beginning from the full phrase, the text is altered by an electronic timer to display a sequence of variations as different combinations of words are illuminated, others being extinguished and rendered more or less invisible. Turning the phrase into a set of contradictions and questions, the work playfully marks its meaning as pliable, casting doubts on the stability of language itself. In the process, the work raises questions about the nihilism that haunts the phrase that is its material, creating in its place alternative maxims, statements and questions which insist on, or speculate about, the possibility of imagining a future to live for.
