Etchells’ silent video Paint it Black arises from a simple performance task in which the key lyric of the Rolling Stones song of the same name is enacted as a literal instruction. As on-screen images, adverts, texts and headlines from a range of magazines and newspapers disappear under black paint, Etchells continuous painting consigns rock stars and politicians, economists and models, natural landscapes and statistical charts to the darkness of oblivion.
First produced as part of Davis Freeman’s 2014 project Karaoke (ART).
Camera & Production: Anna Krauss.
